DUTIES:
The Staff Nurse provides direct and indirect nursing care to patients and families ! in a nursing care unit/area. He/she is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice. The staff nurse demonstrates leadership when providing and improving patient care. The incumbent reports directly to the Nurse Manager of the patient care unit/area. The staff nurse serves as a role model when functioning as team leader or charge nurse under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, etc, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace req! uiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense cus! tomer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

The Staff Nurse is a citizen of the United States and is currently licensed as a Registered Nurse with an active, current, full and unrestricted license. The incumbent is a graduate of a state approved nursing school or one accredited by either the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). He/she has an Associate Degree or Diploma and approximately two to three years of successful nursing practice or has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with two to three years of successful nursing practice; or a master's degree in nursing with one to two years of successful nursing practice; or a master's degree in a field related to nursing and a BSN from an accredited or state app! roved school of nursing with one to two years of successful nursing practice; or a doctoral degree in nursing or related field. Maintaining a current BLS/ACLS certification is required for this position. Annual training for administration of Moderate Sedation is required and competencies maintained. He/she has the physical and mental capability to satisfactorily perform assigned duties.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethi! cs and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, edu! cation/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience Requirements:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in! a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
