Extending the world-class care of the duPont Hospital for Children, the Nemours Children’s Clinic provides expert care for even more children across the Delaware Valley through community-based physician services and collaborative partnerships with health and hospital systems. To meet the needs of even more children, the duPont Hospital for Children will be expanding our pediatric intensive care unit with state-of-the-art technology. In 2011, we will be breaking ground on a new inpatient pavilion that will include all private patient rooms, an expanded Emergency Department and patient family amenities.

The Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is responsible for improvement and maintenance of scientifically based clinical nursing care for the surgical patient population. The CNS achieves this by providing direct and indirect care to patients and their families, promoting staff development, disseminating and conducting research and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. The role of the population-based CNS is directly aligned with the pursuit of national recognition for nursing excellence through their work to advance nursing practice and improve the patient care environment. Responsibilities include: 1. Providing clinical expertise related to the surgical pediatric patient population. 2. Provides education or builds teaching skills in direct care staff, patients and family. 3. Role models multidisciplinary team-building and effective team functioning. 4. Monitors and evaluates outcome data 5. Reviews alternative approaches and implementing planned change to meet patient and family needs considering cultural, ethnic, and social and system diversity. 6. Interprets and uses research to evaluate practice, and also collaborates in research. 7. Acts as a change agent in the patient care system. 8. Influences the negotiation of moral dilemmas, allocating resources, directing patient care and access to care.
